Etymology

From Middle High German want, from Old High German want, from Proto-Germanic *wanduz (“fence, wall”), from Proto-Indo-European *wendʰ- (“to turn; bend; wind; twist; braid; weave”). Cognate with English wand although developing a completely distinct meaning.
