das Test

noun · /tɛst/ ·
Etymology

Borrowed from English test, from Old French test (“pot; melting pot, especially one in which metals were tried”), from Latin testum (“pot”). Compare etymology 2 below. The development from “melting pot” to “procedure of testing metals” also happened natively in earlier German, but the further generalisation is exclusively English.
