From Middle High German tagewerc, tagewerch, from Old High German tagawerk, from Proto-Germanic *dagawerką. Cognate with English daywork. Equivalent to Tag + Werk. The measure of land corresponds to the area that can be ploughed in a day by a team of oxen.
