From Middle High German lœsunge, lōsunge, from Old High German lōsunga (“redemption, payment, ransom, fraud, deception”), from Proto-West Germanic *lausungu, from Proto-Germanic *lausungō, equivalent to lösen + -ung. Cognate with English leasing, Icelandic lausung. Compare also Dutch oplossing.
