Etymology

In the sense of “clerical body” inherited from Middle High German kapitel, capittel, from Latin capitulum. In the sense of “text section” a later borrowing from the same source (ca. 1500). Occasional Old High German kapital, kapitula had no sustained continuation in Middle High German.
