From Middle High German geist, from Old High German geist, from Proto-West Germanic *gaist, from Proto-Germanic *gaistaz, from Proto-Indo-European *ǵʰóysdos (“anger, agitation”). Cognate with Dutch geest, West Frisian geast, English ghost, Swedish gast, Persian زشت (zešt, “ugly, hateful, disgusting”).
